About Kay Miller LPN, IBCLC, RLC
Kay is the mother of two wonderful children. She was a stay at home mom for many years. When her children were a little older, Kay went to nursing school. She became a nurse in 2004. She attended her first birth in 1998, not knowing at the time that she was serving as a doula. Kay has since attended many births, first as a "birth coach", then as a nursing student while doing her clinical rotations, as a nurse working in a birth center, and as a doula. She previously taught childbirth, newborn care, and postpartum classes for families in the KC area, as well as various training programs for perinatal professionals throughout the country. Kay currently focuses her practice on providing breastfeeding/lactation support for families and mentoring for healthcare professionals and others who work in the lactation field. Kay has over 25 years of experience as a perinatal professional.

While serving families before, during, and after birth, Kay noticed an area that was consistently lacking: breastfeeding education and support. The families she served struggled with breastfeeding, and many did not meet their breastfeeding goals. This prompted her to become more interested in preparing families for breastfeeding, and providing support for families who may face challenges during their breastfeeding relationships. Kay began seeking more lactation specific education, and soon became a Certified Lactation Educator. She knew she wanted to do even more to help breastfeeding families, so she began working on the extensive requirements to be eligible to sit for the IBLCE board exam. Kay sat for and passed the boards, earning the IBCLC (International Board Certified Lactation Consultant) credentials. An IBCLC is a healthcare professional that is considered the gold standard for clinical lactation care. Kay currently focuses her private practice on providing breastfeeding support for families in the Kansas City area. She also works as an IBCLC/nurse at one of our KC area hospitals.
Kay is the President of the Greater Kansas City Lactation Consultant Association. She is a member of the United States Lactation Consultant Association (USLCA) and other national and local organizations. She previously served as President of the Doulas of Greater Kansas City and on the CAPPA (Childbirth and Postpartum Professional Association) Board of Directors as Executive Director of Operations from 2010-2016, as Faculty from 2011-2016, and as Regional Representative from 2009-2011. When she is not supporting breastfeeding families, you can find Kay wine tasting, visiting KC area businesses and landmarks, working in her gardens, or relaxing on her patio with a cup of coffee or glass of wine. |
